As e-learning professionals we often work with animations and demos where the user is shown something being performed on the screen.As an extension to this there are lot of tools to help you capture what is happening on the screen .These are known as screencasting tools.

In case somebody is interested: I have also compiled a comprehensive list of both free and commercial screencasting tools as well as a checklist of critera for choosing the screencasting tool that best fits your individual requirements.
